Window Seat by Erykah Badu....art vs media stunt
Soul artist Erykah Badu has recently released a new video for her album New AmErykah Pt. 2. In this video, shot at the grassy knoll, she decides to use one shot of herself walking and removing her clothes to the point of complete nudity. Many people have speculated about what she was trying to say...if anything at all. Some believe she was merely trying to spark controversy to increase sales. However, this is mainly due to the fact that the video was shot in an area considered to be sacred to most Americans. (i.e. the location of JFK's assasination) Furthermore, others argue that if she was not a black woman it would not be as constroversial. Not to mention the video was inspired by Lesssons Learned by alternative group Matt & Kim. This conversation could go on and on, but what do you think? Check it out

Simon the Cyrenian Speaks
He never spoke a word to me,
And yet He called my name;
He never gave a sign to me,
And yet I knew and came.
At first I said, "I will not bear
His cross upon my back;
He only seeks to place it there
Because my skin is black."
But He was dying for a dream,
And He was very meek,
And in His eyes there shone a gleam
Men journey far to seek.
It was Himself my pity bought;
I did for Christ alone
What all of Rome could not have wrought
With bruise of lash or stone.

HEALTH CARE BILL PASSED!!!
via New York Times
"Congress gave final approval on Sunday to legislation that would provide medical coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans and remake the nation’s health care system along the lines proposed by President Obama."
"The health care bill would require most Americans to have health insurance, would add 16 million people to the Medicaid rolls and would subsidize private coverage for low- and middle-income people, at a cost to the government of $938 billion over 10 years, the Congressional Budget Office said."

Controversy VS. Comedy
Ok, so most people have seen the highly discussed 1hr cartoon "Freaknik: The Musical". This comical cartoon features guest appearances by many celebrities including, T-Pain, DJ Drama, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, Charlie Murphy, and more. This story is filled with classic stereotypes of blacks in entertainment, sexuality, and spring break in Atlanta, GA. HOWEVER, the question is how far is TOO far? The depiction of Oprah Winfrey, Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Russell Simmons, and Bill Cosby as an evil society of black activists has sparked great controversy within the black community. Some feel it should be boycotted and others feel that all is fair in the name of comedy. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, so what do you think? Leave us a comment and tell us how you feel!

Servant Leadership
"Tennessee State University has been named to the 2009
President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction, the highest
federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering,
service-learning and civic engagement. "-via TNSTATE.EDU
This is truly a testiment to our institutions motto Think, Work, Serve. In 2008 we were selected as a Community Service honoree, but as we have progressed in our service to others so has our recognition. Congratulations TSU!!! We must continue to expand our service for the benefit of our communities.

Maytown Project
Strives are still being made towards the Maytown Project for Tennessee State University. In order to promote the growth and expansion of our university, this initiative should be supported! The May Family, owners of a 1500-acre plot of land in contention with local government officials, gave TSU 250 acres of land and a $400,000 endowment to construct a proposed agricultural research park and center for sustainable agriculture research. Over the next 25 years this area will be developed and to provide jobs as well as economic growth for Nashville. For more information on the Maytown Project Click Here

BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT TSU
"As associate director of the University's honors program, Latham has been busy prepping high-achieving students to take on the world through global leadership. He placed the first of three through two fundraising initiatives for the Honors Program, evolved the program's curriculum into a rigorous four-course model patterned after the academic program at Harvard University's Business School and designed an annual Student Leadership Conference that helps students learn how to approach their careers from a global perspective...."
